From afar, Mexico is a growing economic force, ranked 64th globally in GDP per capita. However, the coffee-producing states in southern Mexico face a very different economic reality. Oaxaca and Chiapas are the two poorest states in Mexico with poverty rates of 60-80% and extreme poverty rates of 20-40%

Production yields have become dangerously low in these regions. Over the last ten years coffee leaf rust disease and the lack of financial or agricultural means to tackle it has reduced production by up to 90% in some regions. The average yield in Oaxaca is now just 100kg of parchment per hectare. For context, in Colombia, the average yield is 2,400kg per hectare.

The vast majority of Mexico’s 500,000 coffee producers are smallholder farmers and have one hectare or less of land under coffee. This makes the average annual production for many producers just 100kg, making coffee farming more and more unsustainable. This is fuelling widespread migration to urban centres in Mexico and the United States. In short, coffee production is disappearing.

We work with several producer groups in Oaxaca

These partnerships help improve the overall profitability and viability of coffee production for producers in Oaxaca. Our long term focus is on improving yields and building stable demand at a stable price by connecting roasters with producers. We aim to achieve this in ways that are low-cost, easily replicated, and that ensure the first-order upsides are captured directly by those most marginalised.

To achieve these goals we've focused first on building trust and setting a baseline for coffee pricing and pre-financing. La Mazateca is the most isolated and least coordinated region we work in. We are working with Felipe Palacios, a retired teacher, to coordinate producers and buying around the town of Eloxochitlán de Flores Magón. This is a challenge in a remote region where many producers speak only the local Mazateco language, but the coffees from the Mazateca are among the most complex and interesting in Mexico.

Eloxochitlán de Flores Magón

Is the name of the town and its producer association. The region is very remote, hard to access and marked by its steep and dramatic topography. The Mazateca is also known for its more mystic elements with a strong culture of shamanism and psychoactive mushroom use that saw it become an unlikely centre for alternative tourism in the 1960’s and 70’s.

Today the region is rarely visited, and even in the coffee world it is often neglected due to the challenging conditions, remote locations and small production. Even by Oaxaca’s low standards production yields are tiny here in part due to the cool temperatures. Coffee is generally grown at 1500 metres and above in the Mazateca and at this latitude, these altitudes experience very low temperatures making frost damage a real issue for producers.

This climate and these altitudes also contribute positively to the cup profile and in general, coffees from the Mazateca are among the most complex and highest quality in all of Mexico. The landscape is rich in natural forest, with native climax tree species still present, such as qararo (Aningeria adolfi-friederici). The farm is organized into plots, and each plot is planted with a single coffee variety. The varieties grown include: 75227, 74112, 74110, and 74140. The farm is organically managed, with all coffee cherries harvested by hand.

The cherries are pulped using a Penagos eco-pulper the morning after harvest. This machine removes the mucilage and significantly reduces the amount of water needed to wash the parchment. Local communities, mainly of the Oromo ethnic group, used coffee in their traditional practices long before it was commercially exploited.

For a long time, the Guji appellation was included in the Sidama appellation. In order to better distinguish the quality of the coffee produced here, this designation was separated by the Ethiopian authorities in the 2000s. The coffee is grown under natural shade in an organic farming system by a network of 350 registered outgrower farmers, most of whom are women smallholder producers. Farmers carefully handpick only ripe cherries, ensuring high-quality raw material. Before processing, the cherries are floated to remove lower-density beans, and only the best cherries are selected. A journey which adds to their already high costs of production.

Origin: Guji, Ethiopia
Woreda: Uraga
Farm: Tabe Burka
Species: Arabica
Varieties: 74110, 74112
Process: Natural
Drying: Drying beds
Packaging: 60kg - Jute bags
Altitude: 2330 m.a.s.l.
Harvest Period: November - February
Type Of Harvest: Manual

About this coffee

Seated in the Southern Oromia highlands, Guji is characterized by its stunning biodiversity, dense native forests, and exceptionally high elevations, often ranging above 2000 meters. Grown at a staggering 2330 meters above sea level in the Tabe Burka district of Uraga, the cherries benefit from intense sunlight, cool nights, and fertile, organically maintained soil.

The harvest runs from November to February. With meticulous care, farmers and their families selectively handpick only the deeply red, perfectly ripe cherries, which are then sun-dried whole on raised African beds for 15-20 days, a patient process.

Oboleyan works directly with 148 smallholder families in the Uraga district, particularly around the Tabe Burka kebele. "Oboleyan" translates to "brothers" or "siblings" in the Oromo language, a name that perfectly captures its essence. Founded in 2018 by the four Edema brothers (Tariku, Wendimu, Demelash, and Anteneh), the company is a fusion of deep-rooted family legacy and entrepreneurial vision. Their father was a respected figure in Guji's coffee sector, making them a true third-generation coffee family.

Tabe Burka

Uraga coffee is sourced from smallholder farmers whose plots lie within a 10 to 20 km radius of the local washing stations. These stations, managed by private owners, act as central collection points, bringing together cherries from numerous nearby producers.

Situated in the renowned Guji appellation, the Uraga district shares its borders with Odo Shakisso and Hambela, both famous for producing exceptional Guji coffees. Yet, Uraga stands out not only for the quality of its cup but also for the deep-rooted history of coffee cultivation in the area. In fact, coffee growing in Uraga may predates that of its neighboring districts. Among the trees here is a rare varietal producing yellow cherries, known locally as Wallagga, a name that hints at the long journey and origin of these coffee trees.

Farming in Uraga follows a traditional polyculture system, where coffee is intercropped with various food crops. A central component of this system is the enset (false banana tree), a plant of immense agronomic and cultural significance. The root of the enset, when pounded and fermented, forms a staple of the local diet. But beyond its nutritional value, enset plays a vital ecological role. It stores water in its trunk, providing a steady source of moisture during dry spells. Its presence amidst the coffee trees helps maintain a stable microclimate, shielding the plants from harsh conditions and supporting year-round vitality.

This unique integration of ecology, tradition, and biodiversity makes Uraga coffee not only distinctive in flavor but also a testament to sustainable, time-honored agricultural practices.

Our packaging is made of 100% recyclable plastic.
